Introduction
(tirzepatide) is an injectable medicine registered initially in adults with type 2 diabetes. However, in recent years, it has also been known as an effective treatment for obesity or overweight individuals, as it is often prescribed off-label in that regard. Mounjaro not only regulates blood sugar but also decreases appetite and slows the rate at which your stomach empties, thus resulting in a considerable amount of weight loss because of its dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Regardless of whether you have type 2 diabetes or you are just starting Mounjaro as a way of weight loss, it is important to follow the proper dose schedule. This guide provides detailed and useful volume conversion with tips on injections to help during your treatment period.
The first-in-class drug Mounjaro (tirzepatide) targets two major hormones. The process of treatments usually starts with 2.5 mg once a week during the first 4 weeks. This amount of dosage is not meant to be used in the control of glycaemia, but it is used to help the body adapt to the medication and also to minimise the chances of nausea and other side effects.
The dose will be raised by 2.5 mg every 4 weeks after the first 4 weeks until the effect is achieved or when the maximum dose that can be taken is attained. The titration can be done in a stepwise manner, like the following:

Each Mounjaro pen will deliver 0.5 mL per dose, no matter what the strength dosage is in milligrams. The amount of fluid that you inject does not vary each week. The only thing is that the concentration of active medication present in that 0.5 ml changes. This will standardise the process of giving the injection and eliminate the confusion by patients titrating their dose.
The term units is frequently used to describe a measure of biological activity rather than volume or weight when discussing injectable drugs such as insulin or GLP-1 receptor agonists. Unlike insulin, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is dosed in milligrammes (mg) rather than units.
Every Mounjaro pre-filled pen is labelled and prescribed according to its mg strength per 0.5 mL dose, not in units, as you could read in the case of insulin pens. The implication is that patients are always expected to look at the label that states mg (e.g., 5 mg, 10 mg) without attempting to convert to insulin-like measures.
At present, there is no standard equivalent to convert milligrammes (mg) into international units (IU or units) of Mounjaro because it is not a hormone such as insulin where a unit equivalency has been established. These pens are not graduated in unit markings, and an entire dose (0.5 mL) is administered.
